Apohadion (New Venue) and Plains (local band)

Been meaning to write this up for a while but just didn't happen. Went to a show in Portland at a great new(ish) venue/artist studio called Apohadion (Portland's "subterranean theatre"). It is the studio of Pat Corrigan and Dave Noyes over at 107 Hanover St. Check out the Bollard for the backstory. Anyways the show featured Tiny Fires headlining, with Plains and The Orchard opening up. They were all great, but my favorite was the band calling itself Plains. They were heavenly, ethereal, transcendent. The myspace site doesn't do it justice, as I think the stuff on there was recorded a while ago. They had beautiful, close harmonies, acoustic and varied instrumentation, which they all rotated playing and very earnest and sincere. I loved it and I loved the space it all took place in. I highly recommend it and the band. Listen for yourself:

Plains-Good for Nothing mp3

And can you believe that recently Rakim performed here as well as Ghostface Killah! Raekwon is here Dec. 18. Medeski, Martin and Wood is here Dec. 5 at Port City Music Hall. Josh Ritter comes around Dec. 7th at Bates College as well.

Enjoy!

All My Friends Are Funeral Singers

Was a great experience. Went to the Califone multimedia experience on Wednesday over at the Space Gallery. The lead singer has written and directed a movie referred to in the title of this post. The movie had its issues but overall I thoroughly enjoyed it. The movie portion of the night entailed a big screen on wheels in front of the stage at the Space, with the musicians of the band behind the screen playing along to the movie at different times. They added accents, flourishes and coloring to the movie. The movie was a sort of Lynchian, alternate reality exploring mystery/suspense/psychological film that I really enjoy breaking my brain over. It featured a psychic and her "psychic mind" composed of several "familiars", or spirits that helped her do her divinations but were trapped in her mind I suppose.
Then the band proceeded to play a set of music that was truly amazing and thoroughly enjoyable. If you haven't listened to Califone before check out their myspace page here. They have a sort-of alt-country, americana sound but combined with a real talent for subtle and jarring electronic sonics and effects that really add to the songs they write.

Especially "Return to the Sea". Well, they have something new out and I like it. You should all check it out, the new album is out and called "Vapours" :

Port City action past and future (Krs One is on the way)

Okay, sorry no posts for a while but it's hard to find the time. I have been wanting to write about two shows that I recently attended here in Portland, ME. Both were at the same venue, a newish place called Port City Music Hall(pix above left). It is a place that doesn't look like much from the outside, kind of run down and dumpy actually, with lots of sketch looking concert posters that have no color, advertising the upcoming shows. Once you enter however it is a whole different story. Upon entering there is a lounge area outfitted with very hip, cool sofas and small tables and chairs. Really classy decor, totally redone inside from what it was previously (a sports bar type of deal)it has cool chandeliers and shiny wood floors and just a stylish vibe. The biggest and most important thing about it is a 500,000 dollar investment by the owner on the sound. After seeing the two shows previously mentioned, I can say it was well worth it, it sounded great in there. They have the option for regular general admission tix and also VIP which seats you at private tables to the right of the stage on a slightly raised area with it's own bar.

Okay to the shows....

First show I saw at Port City was the "alternative bluegrass" band called Crooked Still. We (my wife and I) had seen them several years ago in Cambridge when they were first making a name for themselves and we enjoyed it and their cd very much. So when we heard that they were coming to Portland we got tickets right away. The band consists of vocalist Aoife O'Donovan, banjo player Dr. Gregory Liszt, bassist Corey DiMario, cellist Tristan Clarridge and fiddler Brittany Haas. They are known for "their high energy, technical skill, unusual instrumentation and innovative acoustic style" according to wikipedia. They put on a great show, the lead singer has a great voice and lots of karisma on stage, sort of a cute charisma. They were just a breath of fresh air and the sound in the venue, as I said before was great!

Ain't No Grave:

And then a couple of weeks after this show we returned to Port City and saw Neko Case!! I had seen her before together with The New Pornographers, of whom she is a member of (they are a Canadian super group), but to see her solo I knew would be another story. I loved her album "Fox Confessor Brings the Flood" and the latest, Middle Cyclone was even better. This show was so tight, so professional, sooo good. Her voice is a like a goddess, she really has a beautiful and unique voice. The place was packed for this show. Unlike the Crooked Still show where the band requested seating and I think the venue was okay with it because it wasn't sold out, for Neko's show it was standing room which is about 600 plus people in a small space. All these bodies made for a steamy atmosphere, and we had a great view because my wife and I slithered our way up pretty close. she had a pretty elaborate in a DIY way stage set-up and she seemed to be very particular about things like sound and light and positioning of amps and such but once she got it all sorted out they rocked the house. Everyone was alternately rapt and rowdy (at the appropriate time) and I think Portland showed her a lot of love. It was a great experience. The harmonies between her and her back up singer were transcendent! They just took you away. Here are some pics from this show I got sent to me from Bryan Bruchman:

check more pix from Bryan Bruchman here

People Got a Lot of Nerve-mp3

And last, KRS One, Yes Mr. Knowledge Reigns supreme Over Nearly Every One is coming to Port City next month, the 18th with Buckshot. Wow. A legend, this place just keeps getting great shows... Keep them coming!!

Here is one of my all-time favorite hip hop songs, maybe the first that I memorized all the lyrics to, or was that "the fat boys are back"?

It Might Get Loud

New movie coming out. According to press kit:
Rarely can a film penetrate the glamorous surface of rock legends. It Might Get Loud tells the
personal stories, in their own words, of three generations of electric guitar virtuosos – The Edge
(U2), Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), and Jack White (The White Stripes). It reveals how each
developed his unique sound and style of playing favorite instruments, guitars both found and
invented. Concentrating on the artist’s musical rebellion, traveling with him to influential locations,
provoking rare discussion as to how and why he writes and plays, this film lets you witness
intimate moments and hear new music from each artist. The movie revolves around a day when
Jimmy Page, Jack White, and The Edge first met and sat down together to share their stories,
teach and play.

Sunday @ Pitchfork

Sunday at Pfork starts for me around 1:45pm for Frightened Rabbit and Blitzen Trapper. This was the time period I took care of all needs so I wasn't completely watching but I did end up watching a good chunk of Blitzen Trapper and they were perfect for a sunny afternoon in the park. Today was all about getting a good spot for The Walkmen, which led me to stage C for Pharoah Monch. I knew a bit about this rapper from Queens, NY and had liked all that I heard but hadn't pursued much. He was off the hook! He had the crowd jumping, some even tried to mosh but they were repulsed and kind of stared at as if they were loony. I really enjoyed this show.

Simon Says - Pharaohe Monch mp3

Got just about to the very front (which can be verified if you look close at the video on Pfork TV). I worked hard and waited long but I knew it would be worth it. The Walkmen 15 ft away from me about to rock out. While I waited I made friends and also listened to the Thermals show which sounded great. They played quite a few covers that I recognized. Green Day, mabye Hole?, some others.

Finally the wait was over and they were awesome!!! The lead singer shreds his vocals but at the same time sounds cool and detached. Yet he poured every ounce of himself into the mike onstage. Seeing "The Rat" live was so cool. So were so many others. They brought a horn section out for several songs. They didn't look like your typical rockers but they brought the goods. All the musicians were very talented and the bass and piano players switched places often. The drummer was a pulsing live-wire driving the band onward. The only slight drawback is that I got so close that I got in back of the two huge audience speakers and so had a bit of a drowning out effect on the vocals. Not terrible but I won't make that mistake again.

Hang On Siobhan - The Walkmen mp3

I had picked up a t-shirt of The Walkmen earlier and now I wore it proudly on my chest. The next while was spent meeting up and hanging out with Mauricio and crew. I listened to M83 and they sounded awesome. Big and large for a big, large space. I listened to Grizzly Bear, who I am not 100% behind but they have several songs that I dig. And then we decided to go check out The Very Best at the dance stage first. I felt bad for these guys because they were going up against The Flaming Lips, the headliners. They were unphased though and it was bangin'!!! I got my groove on and it was really, really difficult to pull myself away, but I had never seen the lips and how could I ever live with myself if I had the chance and didn't take it. So I ripped myself away from Esau and crew and got up as close as I could without incurring any stressful feelings and thoroughly enjoyed The Lips' set. Wayne Coyne was quite a showman, they had a lot of big giant balls bouncing around, a special set, light show,he had some giant air gun that filled a balloon at one point so large that it blew up as the climax of "Do You Realize" (the set closer) happened, shooting confetti everywhere in the sky. It was quite a spectacle but really fun, a giant sing-along. And it was over just like that, back home, next day walked to the El, took it to the airport and was back home. I got to see five of my very favorite contemporary musicians all in one weekend and I feel so lucky for the opportunity. Thanks to Mauricio for once again puttin me up/up with me. And thanks to my family for sending me off with blessings to a fun weekend of music.

The Flaming Lips - Do You Realize

Finally a pitchfork wrap-up....

So I went to pitchfork again this year. This time around it was a bit different for me as I pretty much flew completely solo for most of the 4 days I was in Chicago. Of course my main man in Chi-town, Mauricio put me up for the 3rd year in a row and we did hang a bit. Otherwise I was a loner and it was really great. Okay, so first day I get to Chicago and jump on the El over to Wicker Park area where Mauricio lives. He is there with his lady and we get to hanging, they are not going for the Friday shows so I hang a bit and I am not worried about catching Tortoise because it would have been really hectic and I have seen them before. So the hang stretches, time warps on and then, Oh &^%$#t, Yo La Tengo, who I am extremely psyched to see is on in five minutes!! What do I do Mauricio? Do I have to call a cab or can I hail one like in my native New York but not like in my adoptive Portland, Maine. He says no problem go out to the corner and hail one. I get all my stuff together which is a project because I have to travel light but be prepared for anything, run out the door and immediately catch a cab to Union Park. I get there and the music is floating through the air, they have just started. I bob and weave my way through all the lemmings, show my ticket, open my pack for the inspectors and I am in. Hustle up close and I have only missed one or two songs. They go on to put on a great show, Ira Kaplan shreds the guitar and does some really crazy freak outs both in sound and body. They play sugarcube which sends me (Friday's bands were all "Write the Night" sets where people emailed in their requests) and I am happeee!.

Then came Jesus Lizard, whom I had also seen before and wasn't that determined to see them, so instead I used the time to get my beer tickets and wrist bands and all the associated lines. Next is the headliners and one of my all-time favorites, Built to Spill. I am so pumped up and they did not disappoint. Maybe some pompous music geeks were poo-pooing the fact that it was "all the hits" but I loved it.

Untrustable:

Got out of there on such a high, walked home with the masses alone together and went to Mauricio's pad. He was out partying and I just hung and vegged to cable a bit and then crashed. Next up was an all day Saturday of music. My host was in for this day and although I was interested in seeing Cymbals eat Guitars, it was the first show of the day at 1pm and it just wasn't happening so after hanging at the pad until about 2:30 I set out wanting to check out The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. Got all the lines out of the way and checked the band out. They weren't bad, enjoyable. Then watched the Bowerbirds for a bit who I had seen before, they don't exactly fit well in this outdoor concert setting but they are a great band. Then began what seemed like was the pattern for the next two days. After getting my food and drink needs taken care of, I would begin the battle to get up front. Made it up pretty close for Yeasayers set, which was amazing, high-energy, dancing fun. In the back of my mind though I am making moves in anticipation for the next show on this stage, one of my very favorite bands of today; Beirut. I got up really close and then had to wait an hour in a pretty uncomfortable position, in very claustrophobic conditions. I didn't mind though, I had lots of little conversations and I was able to see Doom and hear his set a bit. I heard lots of people saying later that they didn't enjoy it and some even said that he was lipsyncing. All I know is that it was pretty warm and he was in full leafy camouflage. Don't know how he did that, mask and all.

Beirut went on finally and promptly at 7:25. I was so excited and it did not disappoint. I was wondering if he was going to have as much going on as on the albums but he only had six people or so up there but it sounded great. He seemed like a very cool person, nice stage presence, self-effacing, spoke a lot of french (he isn't french but is a francophile). And the people just loved him, myself included.

And finally, to cap off the night was The National, another of my very favorites of today. It unfortunately was on the other stage so I wasn't able to get up really really close but close enough. I had high expectations and although it ended up being a really good show, the beginning was a bit rocky. In my opinion the lead singer (Matt Berninger) sounded a bit flat, and he seemed a bit out of it. He did warm up though and the band was great. Eventually, on the strength of their amazing songs I was taken away and rocked out to them and a good time was had by all and overall I would say they were a B+/A-. One of several highlights was "Mr. November"

Again, off with the masses on the walk home alone together on a concert high, and again and unlike past years, I declined partying it up further and went to veg on more cable (we don't have cable so it is a treat) and go to sleep. End of Saturday and more to come.

To be continued......

Slightly Burnt Out on "New" Music..

I haven't posted in a long while, mostly because I have been extremely busy with real life. The hiatus however hasn't only been due to my daily responsibilities but also because I have felt a little burnt out with processing all the music that is out there, while at the same time trying to absorb the fruits of all the other artistic bounty available to us all. Watched "The Last Picture Show" last night to celebrate finding it for under 10 dollars. For those of you who have yet to see it or if you haven't seen it recently, it is highly recommended. I have been focusing on music that isn't brand new lately and have decided to put together a little "EP" length fun pack o'songs for anyone who still read this. Hope you enjoy:

Oh man oh man oh man oh man! Have you seen the Pitchfork lineup yet??!! Okay. So, 4 of my absolute favorites are playing, and they haven't even finished announcing acts. Built to Spill, The National,Yo La Tengo and The Walkmen! Are you kidding me! It's absurd. Bananas! Oh, and did I mention Pharaoh Monch and Jesus Lizard? Oh yeah, and also, umm. We the fans get to pick the setlist for Built to Spill, Jesus Lizard, Grizzly Bear and Yo La Tengo! Here is what has been announced straight from PFork itself: (Some music at the end of this too).

Friday, July 17

Built to Spill
The Jesus Lizard
Yo La Tengo
Tortoise

Saturday, July 18

The National
Pharoahe Monch
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
+ many more!

Sunday, July 19

Grizzly Bear
The Walkmen
Vivian Girls
+ many more!

OK. Now. In past years, we've booked our Friday night lineups by teaming up with All Tomorrow's Parties and their "Don't Look Back" series, presenting bands playing classic albums all the way through. Last year, Public Enemy performed It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, and Sonic Youth performed Daydream Nation in 2007.

This year, we're doing something different.

Starting on Friday night, we're kicking off a new series called "Write the Night: Set Lists by Request." You, the audience, vote on which songs all four bands-- Built to Spill, the Jesus Lizard, Yo La Tengo, and Tortoise-- will play. It'll work like this: When you buy your ticket, you'll get a confirmation email. That confirmation email will include a link to a page where you can vote on which songs from each band you want to hear. The bands will tailor their set lists accordingly. Oh, and did we mention this is the Jesus Lizard's first American show in a decade? Righteous, yes?

Tickets go on sale March 13, and voting starts the same day. Voting ends June 12.

Of course, we'll announce a ton more bands in the coming months.

And if you noticed above, yes that is new material from The National, who apparently have an album that is being planned for next year. Oh man. Can we wait that long?

Beach House cool cover song and 1 more

So one of the first albums I ever really listened to and got into was a Queen album. "The Game" was in my house for some reason. A New York City Puerto Rican home didn't typically have Queen albums sitting next to Salsa albums, but mine luckily did. Anyway, one of recent times more interesting bands is Beach House. Put the two together and you have a chilling version of a Queen song off the aforementioned album, "Play The Game". I'll include that and another Beach House song. Check them out, very worth it.

New Beirut on the way

Beirut is due to come out with some new music. Their music is just beautiful. Well, really it is the work of a musical prodigy by the name of Zach Condon who, to my surprise (considering the styles of music) is originally from Alburquerque, N.M. Under the name Beirut they have come out with two full length albums, both of which I still really enjoy. They range from Eastern European inspired horns, gypsy-like music to old-school french inspired music, (but not exactly). The first one is called "Gulag Orkestar" and I have enjoyed it so much it made my "so good I purchase it on vinyl" philosophy. They have two new EPs coming out February 17th. One, titled "March of the Zapotec", collects six new tracks partially recorded in Oaxaca, Mexico and features contributions from the 19-piece Banda Jimenez. The second, "Holland", is credited to Realpeople, another, old project name of Zach Condon's but featuring new music.
Track listings:

Beirut: March of the Zapotec:

01 El Zocalo
02 La Llorna
03 My Wife
04 The Akara
05 On a Bayonet
06 The Shrew

Realpeople: Holland:

01 My Night With a Prostitute From Marseille
02 My Wife, Lost in the Wild
03 Venice
04 The Concubine
05 No Dice

Can't forget about Miles

The album had its ups and downs but it had some amazing songs. One of which will be on my uselessly late top songs list (if I ever post it). I expect big things from him, and I also heard a rumor a while back that a local establishment was trying to get him here to our little port land. Here is a great quote and video from him...

I HAVE DONE A SHIT TON OF DRUGS AND I USED TO SLEEP OUTSIDE SOMETIMES. I ATE FOOD OUT OF THE GARBAGE AND SAVED FOUND CHANGE TO BUY MALT LIQOUR. IF YOU DON’T ALREADY HATE THIS STORY YOU WILL SOON. Oh the unshakeable stench of cliche that surrounds me.

THE Mission of Burma coming to my area!!!!

These guys are legends!!!
From the "Space Gallery" newsletter:

8:30pm, $15, 18+
Buy tickets here.

Yes, THE Mission of Burma!

"They're making their noise their way, the same way they did some two
decades ago. And it's a sound as vital and inspirational as ever." - Pitchfork

Mission of Burma is an American post-punk band formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1979. The band was formed by Roger Miller (guitar), Clint Conley (bass), Peter Prescott (drums) and Martin Swope (tape manipulator/sound engineer). Miller, Conley and Prescott share singing and songwriting duties. Like many of their post-punk contemporaries, Mission of Burma's efforts are largely concerned with extending punk's original vocabulary without losing its essential rebellious spirit. Using rapid shifts in dynamics, unconventional time signatures and chord progressions along with tape effects, Mission of Burma challenges the prevailing idioms of punk while attempting to retain its power and immediacy. Locals Huak return to SPACE with a slew of new songs from their upcoming EP. The Rattlesnakes open the night.

Blood Bank out soon

From www.boniver.org:

BON IVER's Blood Bank Up For Pre-order

Jagjaguwar is pleased to announce that BON IVER's newest release, Blood Bank, is available now for pre-order.

Your pre order copy will ship the second week of January, and the record will be available in stores January 20 in the US, January 19 in the UK.

I have to admit, I have had it for a couple of weeks. (In slightly inferior sound quality, and I will purchase the actual release or actually download it on emusic) but sounds like great stuff. At least 3 of the songs are really making the rounds in my head. There is an interesting experiment with some kind of vocoder autotune, Daft Punk like voice effect of some kind.

You can hear the album streaming over at Bon Iver's mySpace page
